Black Coffee pays homage to the women who raised him in one-of-a-kind look at sold out show in Madison Square Garden

Grammy Award-winning DJ Black Coffee of South Africa is the buzz of the town both domestically and abroad following his sold-out performance at the venerable Madison Square Garden.

In order to appear his absolute best for his historic performance, Black Coffee hired the modern luxury house AMIRI to design a unique style for him.

His outfit consisted of a hand-embroidered and beaded blouse by AMIRI and cropped double-pleated slacks with a jacquard design.

Coffee has already collaborated with designer Mike Amiri; the custom cream AMIRI suit he wore to win his Grammy Award is proof of that.

The well-known music pioneer finds great sentimentality in their most recent fashion collaboration, which honors the women who reared him.

The embroidered shirt was influenced by “The Pyramids,” a work of art commissioned by Coffee and made by South African artist @wonderbuhle as a tribute to the three people who reared him—his mother and his two grandmothers.

“For me this is such an important piece, I am literally carrying my people to Madison Square Garden. The pieces are these three women – one Zulu and two Xhosa – the one in the middle younger in that being my mother.

“Being who I am in the family, I wanted to preserve the history of our family,” explained Coffee.

Amiri described it as an honor to be invited to make the amazing piece and said it meant a lot to put something so emotionally charged together.

“The people that carried me, raised me, I am literally bringing them to witness the biggest moment of my life,” added Coffee.
