When it comes to claiming the good for itself, Mzansi does not waste time. And this may explain the reaction to Davido’s latest tweet about Tyla winning a Grammy.

In case you missed it, over the weekend, South African singer Tyla made history as the youngest South African vocalist and the only female of her age so far to win a Grammy—her biggest career boost yet. Back home, there was a huge party.

One of the people who was happy with her victory was Nigerian artist Davido, who took to his X account to congratulate her. What should have been a simple message of goodwill quickly became a cause of contention.

Davido hailed the musician and called her win a “big one for Africa.” Those statements seemed to irritate several South Africans, and they blamed him for it. One X user, Paballo, pointed out that Tyla won a Grammy not for a joint project but for her own release.

Paballo made it clear that it was a “big one for South Africa” rather than the African continent.

Mzansi was clearly dissatisfied with the thought of sharing Tyla’s Grammy glory with anyone, as her post had received over 12,000 likes and 300 comments.
