The personal effects of former South African President Nelson Mandela will be up for auction.
Using the argument that the objects were pieces of national heritage, the South African government attempted to halt the sale.
According to the organizers, the auction’s proceeds will go toward building a memorial garden honoring Mandela, who devoted the majority of his life to freeing South Africa from the control of white minorities.
In 2013, 23 years after being released from prison and 19 years after winning the presidency, he passed away at the age of 95.
The 70 pieces are expected to be valued at between $2 million and $3 million in total by the auction house. The anthropological doctor Makaziwe Mandela has approved the sale as a means of raising funds for the construction of the Mandela Memorial Garden, which will be situated on 24 acres in the Eastern Cape village of Qunu, where her father was raised and interred.

Dear South Africa,
Selling Nelson Mandela’s deeply personal things such as his shirts is a very low point that as a country you should STOP!
Imagine a Nazi racist buying Nelson Mandela’s shirt, or a drug dealer buying his brief case and showing it off with drugs in it.
